Born Jesper Jonasen to parents Jonas Jespersen and Ane Arntsdatter in Time, Rogaland, Norway. His adopted surname comes from the name of the family's farm, Taksdal.

On December 12, 1900 he married Aagot Johnson at Cooperstown, North Dakota. To the union were born seven children: Ernest, Neva, Myrtle, Hilda, Albert, Judith and Orville.






Jesper Taxdahl was born May 10, 1872, near Stavanger, Norway, (Thime sogn). His parents were Jonas and Anna Taksdahl. He had one sister Anna Taxdahl Berntsen and three brothers, Arm, Ole and Jonas.

He came to America, going first to South Dakota, where there were relatives and friends from Norway who had arrived at an earlier date. Here he worked on farms near Hetland and DeSmet, South Dakota. In 1898 he, together with Carl Helland and Maria Helland traveled by covered wagon and horse team to Griggs County, North Dakota. Here too, he hired out as a farm laborer, working for Edward Michaelis, Peter Larson and Elling Johnson. Ole and Jonas remained in Norway.

On December 12, 1900 he married Aagot Johnson at Cooperstown, North Dakota. There were seven children in the family

Ernest Taxdahl, Neva Taxdahl, Myrtle Taxdahl, Hilda Taxdahl Selness, Albert Taxdahl, Judith Taxdahl Watne and Orville Taxdahl.

They farmed for many years first in Sverdrup Township and later in Helena Township near Revere, North Dakota where he lived until his death on January 28, 1956 at Griggs County Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter, Myrtle.

Mrs. Taxdahl was also born near Stavanger, Norway, (Thime sogn). She came to America together with her parents, Elling and Martha Dorthea Froiland (name later changed to Johnson), when she was four years old. Others who came at this time were Omund Ashland and Dorthea Ashland, Mrs. Froiland's children with her first marriage to Aadne Ashland. Christopher Ashland, Maria Ashland Herigstad and Serina Ashland had arrived in this country earlier.

The family lived first in Minnesota, near Granite Falls, coming to Griggs County, North Dakota in 1883. They traveled by covered wagon and ox team, which took them three weeks. Others in the party were one brother, Omund Ashland and three sisters, Dorthea Ashland, Ingeborg Froiland and Amelia Froiland. One sister, Inga, had died on the voyage across the ocean. Another sister Mrs. Ole Gabriel Kverneland remained in Norway. A brother Hans Froiland, the youngest in the family, was born at the homestead in Ball Hill Township, near Cooperstown, where Mr. and Mrs. Steffen Froiland and daughter Melissa now reside.

Mrs. Taxdahl died April 25, 1949 at St. Lukes Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota.

Orville L. Taxdal of Eugene died Sept. 27 of age-related causes. He was 93.

Orville was born May 17, 1911, in Griggs County, North Dakota, to Jesper and Aagot Johnson Taxdal. He married Esther Watney on Sept. 7, 1939, in Cooperstown, N.D. She died July 26, 2003.

He was educated in North Dakota, where he was a farmer. He moved to the Eugene area in 1956. He worked in a plywood mill. He enjoyed reading, fishing, woodcarving, hunting and gardening.

Survivors include four sons, Dale of Veneta, Owen of Springfield, Robert of Eugene and Gary of Pendleton; two daughters, Ardys Mitchell of Eugene and Ruth MacKimmie of Beaverton; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A great-grandson, Andrew, died previously.

Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park in Eugene. Poole-Larsen Funeral Home in Eugene was in charge of arrangements.

After graduation from Hannaford, High School in 1960, he enlisted in the US Navy. After 4 years in the Navy, Mike spent time working in Minneapolis then in Helena, Montana. After his father Roy died in 1975 Mike returned to farm the home place west of Hannaford. In the following years he did trucking and some farm labor for a neighbor. Mike is survived by sister Ferne Gibbons, Great Falls, Montana; brothers Dennis Watne Apple Valley, Minnesota; James Watne Helena, Montana; sister, Marcia Weinhauer, Abbotsford, BC, Canada; and 12 nieces and nephews. Gary Orville Taxdal

PENDLETON — Gary Orville Taxdal, 67, of Pendleton died Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at his home. Services will be held at a later date at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Mr. Taxdal was born Jan. 13, 1944, in Sharon, N.D., to Orville and Esther (Watne) Taxdal. He graduated from North Eugene High in Eugene and attended some college. He worked as an AT&T communications technician and served in the Coast Guard on the Winona.

He married his wife, Deanna Hartley Taxdal, on June. 19, 1991, in Reno. They moved to Pendleton seven years ago after living in Eugene.

Mr. Taxdal is survived by his wife, Deanna of Pendleton; sons Scott Taxdal of Monroe and Ted Taxdel of Riverside, Calif.; stepson Budd Richards of Heppner; stepdaughter Teresa Byran of Eugene; brothers Dave Taxdel of Veneta, Owen Taxdal of Springfield and Robert Taxdal of Eugene; sisters Ardys Mitchell of Eugene and Ruth Mackimme of Beaverton; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
