    • The Reverend C. Eugene Sabin, 99, a longtime resident of the Cornelius community, died peacefully Wednesday morning, April 29, 2020 at his home, with his son Ron by his side.

Private Cremation Rites were held at the Hoyt Crematory in Forest Grove.

THE REVEREND. C. EUGENE SABIN was born June 12, 1920 in Ballard, Washington, the son of the late Claude Perry Sabin and Gladys (Hansen) Sabin. He moved with his family to Oregon, settling in the Forest Grove community. Eugene attended elementary school and high school in Forest Grove, Oregon through his sophomore year, when he moved to Wilkinson, Indiana. He was a graduate of the Wilkinson High School Class of 1938. He then attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Oregon and then Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon having received a bachelor’s degree in divinity.

He was united in marriage to Bettie Ellen Brooks on August 7, 1942 in the First Christian Church in Forest Grove, Oregon, by Eugene’s father, Reverend Claude Sabin, pastor of the church at that time.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie, on March 6, 2011 in Hillsboro, Oregon, after celebrating over sixty-eight years of marriage together.

His pastoral assignments took he and Bettie serving the First Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in the communities of Redwood City, California; Marysville, California; Bellingham, Washington and Tacoma, Washington, until 1970 when they moved to the Sabin Mini Ranch in Cornelius, where he had resided since. After moving to Oregon, the Sabins served at the Murray Hills Christian Church in Beaverton, Oregon for several years, until 1975, when they began serving at the First Christian Church in Forest Grove, Oregon. They served the Forest Grove Church for 11 ½ years, until 1986 when they retired.

After their retirement, they served as Interims at twelve different congregations including the Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and Christian Churches. In 2006, Eugene began conducting the Sunday Worship Services at the Jennings McCall Retirement Community in Forest Grove, Oregon. He served the Retirement Community for years, until he retired in 2016, at 95 years old.

Eugene was also preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Gladys Sabin.

Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald Sabin and Kelly Lester, of Cornelius, Oregon and Douglas and Linda Sabin; his sister, Yvonne Miller, of Davis, California and his brother and sister-in-law, Pastor Duane and Jan Sabin, of Hansville, Oregon.

Also surviving are his two grandchildren, Kristin and Code Burkett, of Hillsboro, Oregon and Austin and Carolyn Sabin, of Portland, Oregon; his six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to Care Partners Hospice, 1600 N.E. Compton Drive, Suite 210, Beaverton, Oregon 97006, in his memory.

Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove is entrusted with the arrangements.
