Notater - Alfred Emil Bjorgo was born 24 Sept 1888 to Erick Bjorgo & Berit Ruse.in Aurdal Township in Otter Tail County, MN. He had 8 brothers and 4 sisters. He grew up at the family farm and after he finished his education he went to work at the Lillemoen loging camp at Ole Grondahl’s. He was cutting down big trees on Long Lake when he noticed Leta Swanson. The young folks would often hang out together at Ole’s. Time passed and Alfred decided to ask Leta to marry him. They married in November 1911 in Fergus Falls. They lived on the Frank Swanson farm for 6 years. Also living on the farm were Leta’s brother Oscar Swanson and his new wife Lillian (Berge) Swanson. Alfred did farm and carpentry work during those 6 years.
By 1917, World War 1 came along and more men were needed at the flour mill in Phelps. Alfred went there to work. The family moved into the Julius Hagen house in Phelps. When the war was over they moved back to the Swanson farm and later to a small farm Alfred bought. The children went to Barnhard school.
In 1928, they moved back to Phelps where Alfred took over the feeding grinding job. One year the Bjorgo's had scarlet fever. They were quarantined from fall until spring as they had the disease one at a time No one was allowed to play with them. The children weren’t allowed to touch the handle of the town pump. Neighbors would pump and haul water to the Bjorgo home The children who were well did the chores and hauled in water and wood and were allowed to go ice skating on the lake. Alfred wasn’t allowed to come home since he he was away working. It was a long winter! Alfred bought the Elmer Myhre house and son Henry Bjorgo bought his shop and the Bjorgos have remained at the house up on the hill ever since.
